Manny's Deli Sign

Manny’s Deli

For many Chicagoans, Manny’s Deli is a name that is recognized for its towering sandwiches as well as its rich history. Manny’s Deli is a Jewish-style cafeteria that has been around since 1942 and is often described as “the biggest, best-known, and oldest deli in the city”. This past Mother’s Day, my family unexpectedly went to Manny’s on a whim and it is safe to say that now I understand the full hype. Walking into this huge cafeteria-style deli gave me family-friendly vibes and a bolt of energy. Grabbing a tray and walking to the staff excited me for what I was about to experience. First off, the staff was very attentive, fast, and friendly, and added to the whole experience.

I ended up getting the “My Four Kinder” sandwich, which is a stack of corned beef, pastrami, brisket, and turkey pastrami. Each layer of meat had a very distinct flavor but blended so well. I of course had to get it on their rye bread and overall the sandwich was just so good. Alongside this masterpiece, I got a potato pancake, which was the best potato pancake I have ever eaten. It was super crispy and flaky on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. My parents went ahead and shared their classic corned beef sandwich – while my brother tackled “The Big Breakfast Sandwich” which consisted of 2 eggs, bacon (choice of bacon, sausage, or ham), and cheese that is served on a bagel (or toast) with a side of a potato pancake.

We were all very satisfied with the food and the service. One thing we did learn about Manny’s is just the sheer amount of food that they offer. Their menu was way more extensive than what we first thought. I thought it was a straightforward deli but it revealed a collection of Jewish comfort food, hearty breakfast options, bakery, and more. It’s the kind of menu that wants you to go back again to try something new right away.

While the prices are on the higher side (about $25 for the My Four Kinder sandwich), the quality and quantity of the food justify the price. Manny’s Deli is more than just a restaurant but is a part of Chicago history, a place where tradition is served daily. My first visit will not be my last.
