Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament First Round

Another regular season of college basketball has come to a close, and we are now in conference tournament season. The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament has returned to Chicago at the United Center, where it was last hosted in 2023. It is a privilege for us at The Chicago Report to have the great opportunity to cover the entire tournament this year. Luca Cano, Andrew Lucas, and I will be covering all the games with written content here on the website, while also posting video content on our social media channels.

Game 1: Maryland vs. Oregon (Maryland 70, Oregon 60)

Maryland opened the Big Ten Tournament by defeating Oregon 70-60 in a game that was essentially a blowout from the very beginning. Maryland opened the game up by going up 17-4 early. David Coit led Maryland in scoring with 17 points, and 4 other players also scored double digits. Oregon’s highest scorer was Nate Bittle, who went 7-15 from the field and ended with 16 points. Oregon’s 3-point shooting hurt them significantly as they went 0-10 in the 1st half and then 4-11 in the 2nd half, ending the game with shooting 19% from 3 and in total shot 36.5% from the field. Maryland, on the other hand, made 9 threes and shot 30% from 3 and 40.4% from the field.

Game 2: Northwestern vs. Penn State (Northwestern 76, Penn State 66)

In the second game, Northwestern took down Penn State 76-66. The Wildcats were led by their star Nick Martinelli, who finished the game with 24 points. He has now scored 20 points in 24 games this season alone. Jayden Reid led the team in assists with 9, followed by Jake West, who had 5. The Wildcats in total had 21 assists, which is a program record for the Big Ten tournament. Penn State was led by its big man Ivan Juric, who scored 22 points and was one of the four players last night to reach double digits in scoring. Penn State has a bright future as it is the youngest team in the tournament. You can tell they were just inexperienced on the court compared to the Northwestern team. Just big mistakes one and after another and then also the lack of urgency as the game was getting farther and farther away from them. Northwestern advances to now play Indiana.
